Sorry to tell you but Thoreau never wrote: “Everyone must believe in something. I believe I’ll go canoeing.” It is a mis-attribution circulating on the Internet. Great quotation, just not Thoreau’s.– Jeffrey S. Cramer, editor of THE QUOTABLE THOREAU.

Well, shoot! Everyone on the Internet attributes this quote to Thoreau and Snopes doesn’t disagree, but who am I to disagree with you? I have noted the misattribution in the cite. I also deleted my tweet of the quote in my attempt to make the Internet just a little smarter.
I guess Abraham Lincoln said it best: “The trouble with quotes on the Internet is that you can never know if they are genuine.” ;-)
