Peter, you are right. WordPress comes with only two themes and only the most hardy of RSS advocates use them. Everyone else installs another theme.

To install a new theme, you must:

Find, download, and unzip a theme

Upload it to your WordPress themes directory

Activate it using WordPress

Maybe, someday soon, you'll be able to search for, install, and activate themes all from within the WordPress admin screens like is now possible with WordPress 2.7 (beta) for plugins.

If you need more ease, you could always get a free, hosted WordPress.com WordPress blog. They offer a much larger selection of available themes.

A WordPress blog is easily customized with themes

for new starter it could be even easier in my humble opinion.

Todd, don't be so hard on yourself. Those who know K2 can tell what theme you use but you have done extensive customization to make it unique:

Your header has a white background with high-key photos and fun taglines

Your welcome message that spans two columns is rare and cool.

You changed almost all the colors.

And as much as I hate it, it's the content that makes a blog. It's hard to beat posts like your Wha? And I'm still waiting to see you on Larry King Live. ;-)

P.S. Those who are curious to see live search and advanced navigation can see them in action at Todd's blog.

I too use K2. The community has been incredibly helpful (particularly you!) and the customization is fairly extensive. Add the SBM functionality and it's tough to beat.

The only thing I don't like is the number of blogs that use the theme. I've tried to make my site fairly distinct, but it's pretty obvious what the basis of my theme is. If I were more creative and had more time to spend, I could tweak it even more, so I'm not sure it's fair to critique K2 for its pervasiveness.
