Quote of the Day — Bob the Shuttle Bus Driver

And remember, it takes more muscles to frown than to smile, even if the jokes aren’t that funny. —Bob

Bob drives a shuttle bus between the Portland airport terminal and its economy lot. At least, that’s what he’s paid to do. Bob obviously views his role as much more: he wants to bring happiness into his passengers’ lives.

As he drives away from the terminal, Bob introduces himself and explains the routine. He tells a corny joke or two on the way. (What do you call a deer without eyes? No idear. Why doesn’t Tigger have any friends? He’s always playing with Pooh.) On the overpass, he thanks everyone for riding his bus and for their patience. Then he reminds us to smile because it’s more efficient. And everyone does.

Bob has a routine. The jokes can vary (but not too much). And the result is always the same. I exit  Bob’s bus with a “Thanks, Bob!” and a smile on my face.

Thanks, Bob! You made my day.

Ah! Bob the driver – He’s my favorite one of the PDX shuttle drivers. There was a guy on one of the buses at DFW in Texas that I always ran into, too – he was great:

Greg, it’s good to hear there are other engaged shuttle drivers out there.
