The Virginia Tech Thirty-Two

The New York Times is compiling a page with pictures, memories, and stories about the thirty-two killed at Virginia Tech.

Our thoughts and prayers go out for the families, friends, and classmates of these thirty two.

AssignMine.com

AssignMine.com is a place for students to post their work product from assignments and to see others’ work product. In other words, need a term paper? AssignMine just might have one for you. However, from AssignMine’s usage Guidelines:

Plagiarism is not condoned at AssignMine.com.

We created AssignMine.com to be a resource like books, reports, past papers or the internet.

Through our website, we want to see better quality work and greater understanding of the issues posed in assessment. *wink* *wink* Wink

Oh, wait. I added the winks. But they might as well be there.

Reminds me of the lame excuses given by the original Napster, Kazaa, LimeWire, etc. We didn’t create this site so our users could do anything wrong. If they do, it’s their issue and certainly not why we are doing this. Yeah, right…

I feel sorry for college students these days. When I was in college, TV and magazines were the big distraction (music was not, it was my savior). These days, video games, the Interweb, chat, MySpace, downloaded movies, YouTube, and all the rest are the distraction. And sites like AssignMine.com facilitate plagiarism.

I’ll believe AssignMine truly doesn’t want its users to plagiarize when they provide professors with the ability to compare students’ papers with those available on AssignMine.

Actually, that sounds more like a project for Google labs.

Tax Day

In honor of Tax Day, take some time to educate yourself about a good alternative to our tax system. You can read The Fair Tax Book: Saying Goodbye to the Income Tax and the IRS (associate link) or go to FairTax.org.

There is an alternative.

Too Busy to Notice Beauty?

How often are we oblivious to beauty right in front of us?

The Blogan Store

I try to keep my Books page current, but it’s somewhat difficult to do. I like to include pictures and links to where you can purchase the book. I used to do this all manually, capturing, cropping, resizing, saving, uploading, linking, et cetera, but discovered that by becoming an Amazon.com associate, I could simplify the process. As a side bonus (to me), if you buy a book after clicking one of those links, I make a little money. So they say…

Last week I overhauled my Books page and deleted all the old stuff; the page just gets too long, especially if I write any comments about the books. Although I’m not book reviewer, I like to say a little about the books.

This weekend I just discovered an easier way to show display books and my comments about them. Amazon.com provides an aStore site for building custom stores and either providing links to them or embedding them in your own site. I’ve chosen the latter method. Creating an aStore is so much easier than what I was doing.

You can access my store with the link at the bottom of the blue banner at the top of the page. This is still a work in progress. The long page height is not intended to camouflage the counters at the bottom of the store’s page; it’s a byproduct of how Amazon builds the page with iframe tags. I understand there might be a way to dynamically adjust the height of the page. I’ll be looking into that.

And yes, if you purchase from my Store, I will make money (so they say…Wink.

For now, I have left both my Books page and the Store up, even though there is significant overlap. This will allow you (and me) to compare the two.

I hope you enjoy browsing my store. As always, I like to receive recommendations on what on should read next.

Getting Things Done

I used to have “Getting Things Done” on my to-read pile. Maybe I should add it again.
