Yesterday, 32-year-old Charles Carl Roberts IV killed five schoolgirls and then himself at the West Nickel Mines Amish School. Apparently, Roberts carried a grudge for twenty years. In other words, over something that happened when he was 12! In the meantime, Roberts had “grown up,” married, and become the father of three.
It seems strangely appropriate that Google maps does not have a high-resolution satellite view of the Amish school.
Update (Oct 8, 2006): The Amish community is planning on razing the West Nickel Mines Amish School and rebuilding elsewhere.
These people (the Amish) do not allow their pictures taken for religious reasons. So perhaps out of respect for their values, Google has chosen not to have the hi-res images available to avoid exploitation of these plain folks by common gawkers, the media included.
